Difference Between Hotels and Motels. Hotels and motels offer guests a comfortable place to stay and rest. The definition of a hotel varies in many countries. Some of them are; only accommodation, restaurant, bar or place where one can stay and have meals served at fixed times.
The Main Difference Between Hotels and Motels
Hotels are accommodations within the city limits that are open to the customer for a short time. Before, there were facilities such as a sink, bed, wardrobe and table. The main difference between hotels and motels are depends on:
Services and facilities Provided
Over time, more luxuries such as restaurant, pool, telephone and internet are being provided to make the guest feel more comfortable. Lately, hotels allow their customers to have extended stays.
Motels, on the other hand, provide a resting place for motorists. Simply put, motel means a hotel where motorists come to rest. These have large parking areas for vehicles.
Here, interconnecting rooms open onto a common parking lot or a small room can be accessed directly from the parking area. The demand for motels has increased after road construction, allowing people to go on long trips. Motels are located near these roads for the rest of motorists.
Architecture of the Place
Hotels have better architecture with elevators, rooms on many floors, hallways, and other luxuries. The motels have space only up to the first floor with basic requirements only and access to the parking area but no frills.
Personal Care of the Guest
Hotels and motels employ different types of workers. Hotels, for example, may have receptionists, concierges who provide tips and directions to local attractions, and bellboys who carry luggage to rooms.
They may also employ chefs, housekeepers, valets, porters, and elevator operators. One manager, or several, may be on call to supervise employees and help solve problems.
Motels employ a relatively small number of employees, usually receptionists and housekeepers. For very small motels, receptionists can also perform cleaning and laundry duties.
Other Differences Between Hotels and Motels
Hotels and motels also differ in price and often in length of stay for guests. Hotel accommodation usually costs more, although location is key; a four-star hotel in a small or medium-sized city can cost much less than a lower-end motel in a more expensive part of the country, like New York or Los Angeles.
In terms of duration, hotels are built for longer stays; many are located in cities with attractions within walking distance and some, called extended-stay hotels, are designed for guests who intend to stay for weeks or months.

Motels, by design, offer short-term accommodations – many are located in remote areas and provide travelers with a place to sleep for a night or two.
An exception would be a long-term motel guest, someone, perhaps, who lost a home to a fire or is new to a particular city. You could live there for several weeks or months while you arrange for a more permanent home.
Hotels have large enough staff to manage various departments such as reception, cleaning or parking. Motels can be managed with just one receptionist and cleaning staff.
Hotels are more expensive than motels because of the facilities offered and allow for a longer stay. These are the main difference between hotels and motels.
